Oslo, Norway (AHN) - A report by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association and Greenpeace revealed that solar energy could generate 2.5 percent of the world's electricity by 2025.

Solar power could fulfill the annual output from 150 coal-fired power plants by 2025, the report predicted.

Sven Teske of Greenpeace's Climate and Energy told Reuters, "We are in a crucial phase in the solar industry. It's now on a transition from a niche market to the mainstream."

The report further revealed photovoltaic systems, which converts solar light energy into power, now generates 0.05 percent of world electricity and could rise to 2.5 percent in 2025 and 16 percent in 2040.
