Solar well pumpA solar well pump is a wise choice for pumping water in remote locations. For a well that is 1/3 of a mile or more from any power lines, there are three options for powering it: a solar well pump, a windmill, or a gas-powered system. It may be hard deciding which is the wisest for different circumstances.

To aid with the decision, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each:

•Solar well pump - While one can cost a lot up front and while it doesn't work well under cloudy conditions, this type of pump is very reliable, requires no fuel, and is easy to install. It also does not harm the environment, can be left unattended for long periods of time, requires very little maintenance, and has no running costs.

•Windmill - Windmills have worked for many years, but are they still the best method? For windy sites, they may very well be. Wind is a free an inexhaustible fuel source. In addition to that, windmills can last for a very long time. Of course, this only applies if someone is around to care for them as they are high maintenance and labor intensive. They also cost a lot to repair, with replacement parts being hard to locate at times. Another disadvantage is that they only work when there is wind, which is not a daily guarantee for many places.

•Gas-powered pump - Continually providing fuel for a gas-powered pump does cost money, but this cost tends to be only moderate. They are portable and easy to install. Of course, these pumps require replacements and maintenance. They do not have as long lifespans as windmills or solar pumps. In addition to that, they are noisy, dirty, and produce fumes. Perhaps the worst feature is that they pollute and add to the depletion of non-renewable resources. This makes them particularly bad for the environment.

A solar well pump leaves few things to worry about. There is no need to worry about it not working during power outages. In fact, it does not require any connection to a main power grid at all. This can be especially useful if it is being set up in the mountains, out in the middle of a field, or in another remote area that no other power sources can reach.

Also, when a person chooses to use a solar powering options nstead of regular electricity, he or she is cutting down on emissions released into the air. Using a solar well pump is, overall, using an alternative and environmentally friendly power source.
