Solar Heaters

Solar heaters provide heat for space and water with solar energy in two different ways. Because utilization of this type of home heating involves mechanical equipment, it is described as "active solar heating." If the heat was provided through the design and structure of the house, it would be called "passive solar heating."

The two general groups of solar heaters are those that heat air and those that heat liquids. All solar heaters use solar energy collectors to heat whichever base fluid they utilize, be it air or liquid.

Solar heaters which are air-based systems heat air in an "air collector." They can provide ventilation heating as well as space heating. Liquid-based solar heaters use a "hydronic collector" to heat such fluids as water, antifreeze solutions, or another type of heat-storing liquid. They are ideal for central heating as well as water heating.
