Solar
electric systems are an excellent way for people to generate
power and save money for homes and businesses. Of course, installing
such systems not only benefits the pocketbook, but also the environment.
A variety of solar electric systems are available to suit a variety
of energy needs. Factors that contribute differences include location,
climate, and home or building size. Where the most energy is used is
another factor, whether it be through heating, cooling, lighting, or
another way.
Of course, to save the most money, a few other changes should be implemented
as well. Simply setting up a solar electric system in the home may not
necessarily save a large amount of money. Being wise will. Here
are some supplementary tips:
•Energy efficient appliances - replace old
refrigerators and other old appliances with energy efficient ones.
Look for the Energy Star symbol.
•Passive solar energy - keep south-facing window
shades open during winter days to let heat in, and close them on summer
days to block the sun out. Use natural lighting rather than electric
lighting when possible. Design the home so that it needs less energy
in the first place.
•Light - use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
•Unplug - do not just turn off your TV, computer,
and blender when not in use; unplug them.
•Cold wash - run the washing machine on cold.
Also consider switching to one that it is run by natural gas rather
than electricity.
•Evaporative cooler - one of these uses less
energy than air conditioning.
Cuts in utility bills due to newly installed solar energy systems are
more easily noticed if energy-saving tips like those mentioned above
are already being practiced. These systems can be expensive to set up,
but they are worth it in the end. This is true for both your wallet
and the environment.
