Solar water pumps

Solar water pumps are preferable to any other pump types if a well is 1/3 mile or more from any power line. Oftentimes, not even windmill-driven ones compare. For these remote locations, it is not worth the cost of connecting the pump to the grid.

In order to get the most work from solar water pumps, it is important to set up the solar array in an area where it will receive direct sunlight. It should be placed above or beyond any shady tree limbs or other obstacles. Of course, the solar panels do not need to be placed right next to the pump.

The most effective solar arrays are on tracking systems. This means that they follow the sun wherever it goes to continually collect energy from it. Fixed panels, on the other hand, are set up to face south, and they remain facing that direction. They do not pump as much water, but they are less expensive and can tolerate a greater amount of wind loading.

These water pumps only work when the sun is out. They do not work at night or if a heavy cloud has passed over the sun. Their best seasons of operation are during the spring, summer, and fall months. This is because the sun is up for a greater part of the day during these times than during winter. Fortunately, these time periods tend to be when water is most needed.

It is possible to get a battery back-up for a solar pump, therefore allowing the pump to continue pumping at night and on overcast days. However, the efficiency of the overall system may be reduced when it must rely upon these batteries. Also, while solar pumps are very low maintenance due to the panels having no moving parts, batteries require additional maintenance. Of course, these issues are still comparatively minor compared to the advantages of solar water pumps.

A variety of these pumps exist, including some that power fountains, wells, and pond projects. All tend to be very easy to use. One reason for this is because there is no need to deal with any complicated wiring.

In addition to that, these pumps can be used in areas where other power sources are not readily available. Many people take advantage of this for personal cabins in the woods, beach houses on remote islands, or simply for the middle of a large plot of farm land.

Solar water pumps are also much better for the environment than other water pump options. Using electricity powered by the sun does not release harmful emissions into the atmosphere. It also does not deplete non-renewable resources. The sun is going to be around for many years to come and is therefore an inexhaustible source of energy.
