Solar pond heater

A solar pond heater, as its name suggests, is utilized to keep a pond from completely freezing over. This does not mean it exists to keep fish warm during winter months; rather, it prevents ice from forming atop the pond. It is natural and healthy for fish to go into a state of semi-hibernation during wintertime.

When purchasing a solar pond heater, a choice must be made between a submerged or floating style. A submerged heater sits beneath the pond surface and heats a large area. The floating version is kept at the surface of the pond and can de-ice the entire pond or simply provide a vent hole for trapped gases.

The floating versions also require less energy. This could mean either greater reliability at nighttime and on cloudy days or simply smaller panel requirements.
