Solar heating controllersSolar heating controllers can be thought of as the brains of solar heating systems. This is because they know the temperature of all aspects of the system.

In the case of a solar pool heater system, this includes the water temperature in the collectors and in the pool.

Normally, it isn’t beneficial for the system to continue running at night. An exception to that is if the system is cooling the pool during the hot summer months. If the solar pool system continues to run at night, the pool will be cooled rather than heated. Any valuable heat that had been created during the day would be lost.

Solar heating controllers sense that the collector is not collecting any energy at nighttime. When this happens, they switch off the circulation pump. This minimizes any heat loss. Of course, as the sun again begins to warm the collector in the morning, the controller will start up the circulation pump once again.

The above is, of course, an example for a pool heating system. However, solar heating controllers work in a very similar way for a house heating system. These controllers allow a lot of freedom because heating for the home is not dictated by what the sun is currently providing. A solar heating controller provides you with total control.
