Passive solar water heaters are simple and easy to maintain. They have no moving parts. The only energy they use to heat household water is the energy provided by the sun.

In their most basic form, passive solar water heaters are no more than a black storage tank in a well-insulated box. This box must have one clear side facing the sun -- the sun's light and heat is absorbed by the tank, and the water inside it is heated.

Another option is a thermosyphon system. Warm water natural rises, and this natural process circulates water through collectors and into a tank above. This tank can be stored out of site in an attic.

If passive solar water heaters do not sound right for you, consider an active water heater -- it is slightly less reliable, but also slightly more efficient.
