Ceramic solar fountainsIf you want a ceramic solar fountain that is easy to clean and maintain, consider one made from glazed ceramic rather than unglazed terra cotta. Terra cotta is a very porous material. Mineral deposits from the water can be drawn into and absorbed by it. Glazed ceramics, on the other hand, do not get dirty so easily and are also easier to clean. A glazed ceramic solar fountainhead can be cleaned just as you would clean a ceramic bowl. You can use S.O.S. pads on them. We recommend using only environmentally friendly products. Vinegar makes a great cleaning solvent. To get rid of slime, use warm water with just a small amount (tablespoon or so) of bleach. It is important to remember that some ceramic solar fountains may be made from low-fired ceramics with a glaze. When washed in really hot water, the glaze can crack. Also, the glaze may leave pinholes open which water could seep through. To help with these problems (and to help with unglazed terra cotta fountains,) consider sealing the bowls of your fountain. |
